Best Young Guitarists 40ish and Under: Tim Collis
Age: 40ish
Bands: TTNG
Essential Album: Animals by TTNG
Tim Collis is a master technician from England. He plays complex lines and finger-breaking melodies, but his playing is not at all cold or detached like a typical math rock guitarist. He's not just playing scales and spitting out notes as fast as possible. Each note he plays is very purposeful and emotive. There is emotional depth to his playing that I think sets him apart in the genre. Though, I do think of his band, TTNG, as an Emo band more than a Math Rock band. Mostly because of the vocals and lyrics but also because of the emotional range of his guitar. I read somewhere that one of his favorite albums is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins, and that rang true to me based on what I hear in his playing. He doesn't just listen to guitar noodlers and imitate, copy, repeat. He loves music and melody and storytelling.
I first heard his playing on TTNG’s Audiotree Live session, and I was completely struck by the blur of notes he created on the guitar. And his demeanor while playing is so strikingly calm. He plays with a graceful fingerpicking style, but he also employs a two-hand tapping technique pretty regularly in his music. I don’t know any other guitarist quite like him. He truly has a gift from the gods. If I could wave a magic wand and be able to magically play like any guitarist in history, I would choose to play like him. Seriously.
HERE is the Audiotree session that catapulted by admiration for Tim
