Best Young Guitarists 40ish & Under: Gary Clark Jr.

Age: 39

Bands: Gary Clark Jr.

Essential Albums: The Bright Lights EP and Gary Clark Jr. Live

I saw Gary Clark Jr. live in concert at the Wonderstruck Festival a few years ago, and his guitar playing was electric from the very first note. The first note he played rattled my ribcage and melted my brain. In the middle of his set, I looked around and everyone, I mean EVERYONE, in the entire crowd -- thousands of people -- were all bobbing their heads at exactly the same time. Like we had all been hypnotized. And I think maybe that is one of the best words to describe his playing -- hypnotic.

He is not a particularly technical player. His fingers don't move like spiders over the fretboard like some of the more skilled and highly-trained players, but he has grooves in his blood. And his tone is just rapturous. His guitar playing is killer: bluesy and soulful with a fierce growl to it. Like electric thunder peals across the sky. His playing can transport you. The world around you just gets sucked up into a heavenly groove.

HERE is a next level live session of "When My Train Pulls In" at THE LIVE ROOM
