Best Young Guitarists 40ish & Under: Guitar Tandems

Ok. This is an interesting group. Sometimes, a band has two great guitarists and they maximize the talents of both, each player taking turns on solos and leads -- and sometimes playing a kind of duet. Here are some exciting young guitar tandems in music today.

The Forth Wanderers are a wonder. They are melodic and angular. Catchy and eccentric. Fun and melancholic. They are a churning, yearning, pulsating ball of energy. Every piece in the band works so perfectly with every other piece. And the duel guitarists are no exception to that. They have a kind of sixth sense working together. Ben Guterl is one of the masterminds behind their music and he is also kind of de facto bandleader I would say. But Duke Greene also plays beautiful lead lines. And their guitars just melt together like candle wax. This band has unfortunately broken up, but we can all hope that they somehow recapture the old magic.

Gus Green and Foster Hudson of Geese

Ages: 22ish?

Bands: Geese

Essential Album: "Projector" by Geese

Gus Green and Foster Hudson create tangles of angsty guitars. Their guitar lines don't melt together. They braid together. They create spazzy energy and pretty mazes of sound that just ricochet off of each other as if they are playing inside a cave. Their second album got away from the dueling guitar structure, unfortunately (though it's still a great album). But I really prefer the tandem guitar stylings of their first album.

Essential Album: "Shattered Shine" by Silver Car Crash

They both have compellingly harsh, strident tones that work together really well. Shattered Shine is a great album with some great guitar ideas and guitar sound.
