Best Young Guitarists 40ish & Under: Jazz Guitarists
Gilad Hekselman
Age: 40
Essential Album: Far Star by Gilad Hekselman
Gilad Hekselman, an Israeli jazz guitarsmith who lives in New York, is a smooth, clever, and inventive craftsman on guitar. His playing is very melodic for a jazz guitarist, but he also doesn't disappoint with his deconstruction of his own melodies. He plays with those melodies like a cat with a ball of yarn, and slowly it all unravels in surprising ways all over the house. The magic of his music, though, is that he manages to wind it all back up again into a tight, little melodic ball. I like his 2022 album Far Star, because he starts to get away from the cleaner tones and explore some distortion and grit in his sound.
Julian Lage
Age: 35
Essential Album: View with a Room by Julian Lage
American Jazz musician, Julian Lage, is phenomenal. I absolutely love his tone. His playing is warm and thoughtful. He also has great flow to his music. I think, as a composer, he is more like a classical musician than a jazzman. His music tells a story and captures your imagination and touches your soul. There is a dreamlike quality to his tunes, in my opinion.
